He used to program for KHJ. Then when he moved to his new Boston station, he reduced the 10,000 album library to how many cuts?Radio program director John Sebastian reduced the 10,000 album library in Boston to how many cuts?
Wow, Brenna, a brand new user and your first question is an actual radio question, and a complicated one, not a request for trivia answers. Congratulations.
Being pretty familiar with the Boston market, I asked a PD who was there at the time and he says 200! But then the horse's mouth himself chimed in and assured me it was closer to 300-350 songs. So, a reduction of over 9,500?
It was a very eclectic Hard-Rock in a Top-40 styled station. In fact it may have been less than that during the first couple of months.
A lot of those songs were Led Zeppelin and harder-edged Boston classics ("Dirty Water" by The Standells comes to mind). The station absolutely KILLED, but that success only lasted a couple of years.
I was in St. Louis at the same time and John and I had worked under some of the same people in the past (though never together). We were doing a similar thing and it worked about as well. Both stations debuted with about a 9 share then went to an 11. Incredible.
John Sebastian is an unusual guy. Very well-known. Very much "his own way." He took time to answer your question himself.
Welcome.

Brenna I have not heard an exact number but I bet he cut it at least in half.
